XTERRA Puerto Rico Preview: Adventure Awaits in the Caribbean

CABO ROJO, PUERTO RICO (April 2, 2025) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The 2025 XTERRA World Tour lands in the Americas for the first time this season with XTERRA Puerto Rico, set for April 5-6 in the coastal town of Cabo Rojo. Athletes from across the region will converge on Combate Beach to compete in a full weekend of off-road racing, including the Full Distance Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquathlon, and the 21K Trail Half Marathon.

Defending champion Suzie Snyder (USA), a six-time XTERRA USA Champion, returns to lead the elite women’s field alongside top contenders like Katja Krenn (AUT) and Brittany Schroeder (USA). In the men’s race, 2024 podium finishers, James Kirschner (USA), and John Wiygul (USA) are expected to bring serious pace. “The course is technical and beautiful, with ocean views and sandy run sections that test you mentally and physically,” said Snyder. “The local community really embraces the race.”

The Full Distance Triathlon features a 1.5K ocean swim, a 29K two-loop mountain bike segment, and a 10K run through salt flats and coastal trails. Athletes describe the course as fast, flowy, and deceptively challenging. “It’s such a fun way to open the season,” said Kirschner. “You really get the sense that the locals are just here to go hard on their favorite backyard trails.”

XTERRA Puerto Rico also hosts the opening round of the XTERRA Youth Tour in the Americas. Junior athlete Lucas Wright (USA) will be racing the Full Distance Triathlon and aims to qualify later this season for the Youth World Championship in Trentino, Italy. “XTERRA is way cooler—who doesn’t love mountain biking?” said Wright. “Everything looks beautiful, and that’s what truly gets me going.”

Local age groupers like Edwin Maldonado (PUR) and Daniel Leon (PUR) bring deep course knowledge and island pride. “You have to come to our island to understand our vibe,” said Leon. “Friendly hospitality is always there. Puertorriqueños always have the music inside—salsa, bomba, reggaeton. And don’t forget the mofongo.”

With 28 XTERRA World Championship slots and 58 Trail Run World Championship slots up for grabs, as well as $7,500 USD in prize money for professionals, XTERRA Puerto Rico is a festival of speed, endurance, and exploration.
