Sally conquers Death Valley to emerge the 2021 Badwater Champion
Badwater 135, known as the world’s toughest foot race, spans 135 miles from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, California. You begin the race at Badwater Basin which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300’ (2530m), which is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States. Average temperature ranges at the high of 115 degrees and a low of 87 degrees.
Sally McRae returned to Badwater for the first time since 2018 where she secured 7thplace. Crowned the 2021 Women’s champion, she finished the race in 30:48:47. In a post-race social media post she states “Ten years ago I dreamed of winning this race, and today it came true. Dedicating this win to you! Your encouragement, prayers & support lifted my heart during the lowest points. Thank you!” Following Sally’s Instagram @yellowrunner, you can see race highlights and months of dedicated training in preparation for Badwater 135. “Discomfort is no stranger to me and when I encounter it in a race, I greet it like an old friend- without surprise or fear.” Sally said during one of her earlier training runs.
Congratulations to Sally McRae on crushing this massive goal at Badwater 135 and for running a spectacular race!
