UCAN and Marathon Training Academy Partner to Present “Social Distancing” Run Gone Viral
April 30, 2020
With races having been postponed or cancelled for the foreseeable future, athletes are looking for other ways to get motivated and express their competitive nature. Marathon Training Academy, in partnership with UCAN, is presenting the “Social Distancing” Run in honor of our un-run races. It has since gone viral, attracting over 14,000 registrants in 5 weeks.
“We put this virtual race together so we could continue to engage and support the running community that has given us so much,” says Trevor Spencer, who co-owns MTA with his wife Angie Spencer. “We never thought it would grow this fast, but people have been so excited to share the concept and unique finisher medal.”
Even Olympians like Dathan Ritzenhein are getting involved in the action. “It’s important for people to still have a competitive outlet and have fun, especially during challenging times like these.” Fellow pro runner and Team UCAN athlete Sarah Sellers, who placed 2nd at the Boston Marathon in 2018, will appear on MTA’s Facebook feed on Thursday, April 30th at 2pm ET for a LIVE Q&A session with Trevor for the registered runners.
The “Social Distancing” Run offers a free option, along with several paid options that include the finisher medal, an MTA Training Plan, and MTA gear. All entries include the ability to join the “Social Distancing” Run Facebook Group that has amassed over 6,000 members already.
“We were immediately excited about the idea since it aligns so well with the UCAN mindset that ‘you can.’ You can overcome obstacles, you can remain fit through running and healthy nutrition despite our situation, and you can still achieve greatness in the face of adversity,” says Shoba Murali, CEO of UCAN. “With UCAN, the pursuit never stops.”
