Trevor Foley (USA) And Ellie Salthouse (AUS) Take Victories at the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder Triathlon

- Foley earns his first IRONMAN Pro Series win propelling him up to 10th in the Series standings; Salthouse comes from behind to win in the final miles and earn her first IRONMAN Pro Series race victory moving to 13th in the Series standings - Both Foley and Salthouse secure 2,500 points and $7,500 with today’s victory

BOULDER, Colo. (June 8, 2024) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The foothills of the Rocky Mountains played host to the seventh IRONMAN Pro Series™ race of the year at the 2024 IRONMAN^® 70.3^® Boulder triathlon. The race saw Trevor Foley (USA) take the win in the men’s race with a time of 3:33:36, setting a new bike course best (1:51:09) and dominating the run to earn his first IRONMAN Pro Series victory and securing maximum points. In the women’s professional race, Australia’s Ellie Salthouse chased down Denmark’s Sif Bendix Madsen within the final miles to take the win today with a time of 4:06:12, also earning maximum points.

“I never rely on hopes and dreams,” said Salthouse on the finish line. “I felt really awful from the gun today. I missed that front group on the swim, and I got dropped about halfway around. All my strategy went out of the window at that point. I tried to race my strategy on the bike but wasn’t able to keep a whole lot of nutrition down for some reason. So, the bike was a struggle for me. To give Sif (Bendix Madsen) a whole seven and half minutes is kind of unusual. However, I caught her with 1K to go. When I heard it was about two minutes with three miles to go that is when I put in a big surge to catch her at 1K to go.”

“I started off the day with a really good swim. I was less than four minutes down from some of the likes of the sport’s best swimmers,” said Foley after his win. “Twenty minutes into the bike I was catching fire. Didn’t feel great, didn’t feel bad, but just kept rolling. I was really trying to show off on that bike, because I didn’t have that much run practice yet. I was able to pull it together decently. It was a great day, so I am stoked (to get the win).”

The 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder triathlon saw nearly 90 of the world’s top professional triathletes compete for a piece of the $50,000 total event pro prize purse, and IRONMAN Pro Series points, as well as three slots per gender to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupō, New Zealand on December 14 and 15.

News and Notes

• Despite cramping in the final mile of the run, Trevor Foley (USA) took a dominate lead to capture the overall win with a time of 3:33:36, only 13 seconds short of Sam Long’s course best time of 3:33:23 set in 2023. Matt Hanson (USA) and Sam Appleton (AUS) took second (03:36:47) and third (03:38:57) spots on the podium. Foley’s victory moves him 36 spots up into 10th position in the IRONMAN Pro Series standings.
• Australia’s Ellie Salthouse took the win in the women’s race with a time of 04:06:12, chasing down and passing Demark’s Sif Bendix Madsen, whose own impressive performance saw her lead the majority of the run. Salthouse’s victory moves her 21 spots up into 13th position in the IRONMAN Pro Series standings.
• Matt Hanson (USA) recorded the fastest run split of the day at 1:10:41. Ellie Salthouse (AUS) clocked the fastest run in the women’s race with a time of 1:23:32.
• Trevor Foley (USA) recorded the fastest bike time in the men’s pro field with a time of 1:51:09 setting a new bike course best surpassing Sam Long’s bike split of 1:53:11 set at the 2023 edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder.
• Sif Bendix Madsen (DNK) recorded the fastest bike split in the women’s race with a time of 2:04:50 and setting a new bike course best topping Taylor Knibb’s bike split of 2:06:08 also set in 2023.
• The top three men out of the swim broke the existing swim course best of 23:06, set by James Seear (USA) in 2014. Chase McQueen (USA) was first out of the water in 22:32, with Greg Harper (USA) and Nicholas Quenet (ZAF) separated by two seconds each at 22:34 and 22:36 respectively.
• Jodie Stimpson (GBR) was the first female out of the water with a time of 25:32, followed only one second apart by Valerie Barthelemy (BEL) and Erika Ackerlund (USA) each at 25:33 and 25:34 respectively.
• The fastest transition of the day was from Matt Hanson (USA) in one minute and 09 seconds at T2.
• Of the top 10 in the men’s and women’s professional field the United States had the most athletes with 12. Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Great Britain and Mexico each had 1.
• A total of 87 professional triathletes started the race with 47 male pros and 21 female pros finishing fast enough behind the race winner to earn points towards IRONMAN Pro Series standings.

Results from today’s race saw movement in the top 5 in the men’s standings. Matt Hanson’s (USA) second place finish helped him retain the top spot in the overall IRONMAN Pro Series standings and pull further ahead in points with a total of 10,693. Additionally, Colin Szuch’s (USA) fifth place finish sees him move six spots up to fourth position in the overall standings now holding 6,908 points.

Overall IRONMAN Pro Series Event Prize Money

In addition to the IRONMAN Pro Series’ $1.7M year-end bonus prize pool, there is an event pro prize purse payout of $2,575,000, distributed across IRONMAN Pro Series events. To date the IRONMAN Pro Series has paid out a total of $537,500. Over $2 million USD remains to be claimed at the remaining events.

Up next, the IRONMAN Pro Series will make its way to Oceania for the first time at the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns on Sunday, June 16. The 2024 Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns triathlon will offer professionals a maximum of 5,000 points towards IRONMAN Pro Series standings, a $150,000 event total pro prize purse, and four qualifying slots per gender to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, taking place in Nice, France on Sep. 22 for women and Kona, Hawai`i on Oct. 26 for men.
