LAKE PLACID, N. Y. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The village of Lake Placid and New York’s stunning Adirondacks Mountains played host to the twelfth stop and fifth full-distance IRONMAN triathlon in the IRONMAN Pro Series™ today at the Athletic Brewing IRONMAN^® Lake Placid triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series. The iconic longstanding IRONMAN event also celebrated its 25th anniversary marking a quarter-century of unforgettable moments and incredible achievements at the Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon.

In a thrilling day of racing in the Adirondacks, Trevor Foley (USA) and Danielle Lewis (USA) both earned hard fought victories and their first career full-distance IRONMAN triathlon wins, taking home 5,000 IRONMAN Pro Series points and $18,000 in prize money in the process.

In a career defining performance, Foley ran an incredible 2:36:31 marathon split to catch race leader Matthew Marquardt (USA) and set a new course best time of 7:55:23 surpassing Joe Skipper’s time of 8:03:46 set at last year’s edition. Marquardt, whose own stellar performance saw him lead for the entirety of the race until Foley made the pass in the final miles, followed into the finish line less than two minutes later to take second with a time of 7:57:14. In his first appearance in Lake Placid, Lionel Sanders (CAN) rounded out the podium finishing with an impressive time of 8:05:39.

Lewis’ performance, that saw her come from behind to overtake the field after starting over ten minutes back on the run, earned her not only her first full-distance IRONMAN victory but her first IRONMAN Pro Series win with a time of 9:01:54, skyrocketing her up to second place in standings. Following in second, Jackie Hering (USA) fought her way onto another IRONMAN podium spot in a time of 9:06:26 just over a month after winning IRONMAN European Championship Hamburg, while defending champion Alice Alberts (USA) finished in third with a time 9:10:36.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Lewis after clinching the win. “The swim was fairly standard for me. It was slower than my usual performances, but I still knew that I had a real fighting chance because this course suits me in terms of the hilly nature of the bike and the run. I just wanted to go out and ride really hard and I did. I knew it was a risk racing two weeks ago, but it was a risk I needed to take because I was still ironing out some things in my full-distance (IRONMAN) racing. It gave me a lot of confidence going into this race.”

“This exceeded all my highest expectations,” said Foley on the finish line. “I was hoping to get the fourth Kona spot, but I was absolutely blessed to be the first across the finish. It was an amazing day, and all the stars came together. I ran at the University of Florida, possibly one of the best programs in the country, and I like to think I have some good run pedigree to call upon, but you still have to call in the hard work in the end to get a result like this. I am completely blessed to have a great team around me.”

The 2024 Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon saw approximately 86 of the world’s top professional triathletes compete for a piece of the USD $125,000 total event pro prize purse, and IRONMAN Pro Series points, as well as four female professional and four male professional qualifying slots to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, the women’s race taking place in Nice, France on September 22, and the men’s race taking place in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October. 26

News and Notes

• On home soil, American Trevor Foley went sub eight hours to record his first ever IRONMAN triathlon win, breaking the previous course best time set in 2023 by Joe Skipper. Foley’s time of 7:55:23 was more than eight minutes faster than Skipper’s 2023 record.
• Foley also set the fastest run time of the day, completing the challenging 42.2km course in an incredible 2:36:31, and had the second fastest bike split of 4:18:51 – bettered only by second place finisher and fellow American Matthew Marquardt (4:16:53).
• Danielle Lewis’ Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid victory ensured the Americans went two for two on the top step of the podium. Her winning time of 9:01:54 was just over a minute slower than the course best time set by Sarah True (USA) in 2022.
• Like Foley, Lewis also recorded her first full-distance triathlon victory. Lewis would go on to set the fastest women’s bike split of the day, completing the 180km ride in 4:57:38. She further established her dominance on the run, also recording the fastest women’s split with a 2:52:23 marathon.
• The fastest swim times of the day were set by Josh Amberger (AUS) in the men’s race, who exited the water in 48:27, and Lauren Brandon (USA) on the women’s side in 50:04.
• Results from today’s IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon have had a huge impact on the women’s IRONMAN Pro Series standings, with the women’s podium all moving into the top three overall.
• Second place female Jackie Hering (USA) leapt five places to sit atop the standings with a total of 14,487 points, Lewis’ win moves her up seven places to second, while Alice Alberts (USA) jumps eight places to sit third.
• Hering has completed four IRONMAN Pro Series events, earning a podium in each race.
• There has also been a shake up in the men’s IRONMAN Pro Series standings, particularly in the positions 5-10. While Jackson Laundry (CAN) and Colin Szuch (USA) both move up one place to sit second and third respectively, and Chris Leiferman (USA) jumped five places to sit fourth overall, Foley’s win has had a dramatic impact on the standings, leaping him 28 places to eighth.
• Further movers in the top 10 are Lionel Sanders (CAN), whose third-place finish at IRONMAN Lake Placid moved him up 21 places to 10^th, while Marquardt’s second place elevated him eight places to fifth overall.
• The top three positions in the IRONMAN Pro Series are now dominated by North American athletes, with the USA claiming all three on the women’s side, while positions one and three are occupied by Americans on the men’s side, and second by Canada.
• North America holds eight out of the top 10 places in the IRONMAN Pro Series standings on the men’s side, while the women’s standings have a more international make up, with North American athletes occupying four of the top 10 places, Europeans taking up six places while Oceania claims one spot.

In addition to the IRONMAN Pro Series’ $1.7M year-end bonus prize pool, there is an event pro prize purse payout of $2,575,000, distributed across IRONMAN Pro Series events. The IRONMAN Pro Series heads back to Europe with the Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt triathlon (male professionals only) taking place on August 18. Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt will be the sixth full-distance IRONMAN triathlon and will offer professionals a maximum of 5,000 points towards IRONMAN Pro Series standings, a $ 87,500 event total pro prize purse, and three qualifying slots for each gender to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona (men).
