The Swedish fjörds are ready to host the fifth stop of the Spartan Trail World Championship in Fjällmaraton.

August 6, 2021

The race through some of Sweden’s historical trails marks the half point of the inaugural season of our World Championship, with its 45k and 100k.

ÅRE, SWEDEN – One of the only big trail events celebrated in 2020, Fjällmaraton, is back as the fifth stop of the inaugural season of the Spartan Trail World Championship. The heart of the fjörds in Sweden will be the perfect scenario to continue the battle for the final leaderboard, after Lavaredo Ultra Trail in Italy and Brisbane Trail Ultra in Australia.

This Blue Label race from the Spartan Trail World Championship will be held on Saturday, August 7th. The Kia Fjällmaraton (45k) will be the Trail Run Championship race and the 100k, the Trail Ultra Championship distance. Fjällmaraton is one of Scandinavia’s older trail running races, and once again, will host a great level from runners of all abilities, from orienteering experts, to fast runners and mountain specialists. A race with pure soul in the land of the vikings, where participants will be able to experience pure nature and wildlife during a long summer day in the mountains.

The battle for the Trail Run leaderboard is on fire, and two of the main candidates will be tackling the distance: Spain’s Antonio Martinez (current leader) and Finland’s Mårten Boström. Just a few points separate from each other, and Boström knows the course (was second last year) and things might change. They will have competition though, with Jesper Lundberg (third in 2020) and Swedish legend André Jonsson. The women’s race will see one of the best runners in the world back, Ida Nilsson, who’s been through a recovery process and now after her win in the 27k last week seems to be ready for a longer distance. Fanny Borgström, Johanna Åström, and Henriette Albon are also in the group of contenders for the win.

Even though it is not one of the most technical races in the World Championship, the 100k are still a challenge for both elite and age group runners. We will have new runners jumping to the fight of the final leaderboard, with a possible new winner on this edition for both the men’s and women’s race. Returning athletes Stefan Ehrin (4th in 2020), Viktor Stenqvist (8th in 2020) and Lena Trillelv on the women’s side are some of the contenders of the win, but as it happened last year, we’re waiting for new names to pop on the front pack of the race.

After Fjällmaraton there’s only one more Crown Label race available on the inaugural season which will be Ultra Pirineu, which means the final leaderboard winning options are coming to an end.
