The Marathon Project Announces Largest Personal Bottles Program In Marathon History

February 13, 2025

CHANDLER, Ariz., (February 13, 2025) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The Marathon Project released the details today for a revolutionary personal bottles program that will be available to all 1,200 athletes participating in its two marathons on December 20 and 21, 2025. The Gold Wave Marathon, limited to 1,000 participants, will be the first ever amateur race to offer personal bottles to this many competitors and will be the largest personal bottles program in marathon history.

Details about the program state that every competitor in the Gold Wave on December 20 and the Professional Race on December 21 will be given the opportunity to provide their own fluid bottles. Each athlete will receive bottles six different times along the 26.2 mile course, one per each 4.26 mile loop. Half of the competitors will receive their fluids on the north end of the loop and half will receive their fluids on the south end of the loop. All told, race organizers expect to have more than 125 tables on the course in order to provide enough space for as many as 1,000 bottles during Saturday’s Gold Wave.

Sam Grotewold, General Manager of Professional Athletes for the New York Road Runners, will serve as The Marathon Project’s personal bottles coordinator. Grotewold said that offering personal bottles to all participants will really set The Marathon Project apart.

“Everybody knows that a key piece of performing at your best in the marathon is proper fueling, and it only makes sense that chances of success are maximized when an athlete can race using the same nutrition and drinks that they use in training,” Grotewold said. “I’m excited to help The Marathon Project provide this opportunity to all its participants, which will very likely be the biggest operation of its type in history…by a lot!”

The Marathon Project CEO, Ben Rosario, said that providing bottles to all Gold Wave competitors is an example of the event delivering on its promise to treat everyone like a pro.

“One of the first things we identified as a perk that amateurs wish they had out on a marathon course was the ability to use the same sports drink on race day that they use in practice,” Rosario said. “We’ve spent months hammering out what this program is going to look like and it feels awfully good to be able to confidently say we have it figured out.”

All entrants in The Marathon Project Professional Race, which will consist of 100 men and 100 women, will also be given the opportunity to have their own bottles on the course. The original Marathon Project, held in December of 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic, offered the same amenity and the race produced some of the fastest times in American history including Sara Hall’s winning mark of 2 hours, 20 minutes, 32 seconds.

Katie Sutton, Vice President of Athlete Experience for The Marathon Project, said that providing personal bottles was a must.

“We are extremely excited to provide personal bottles to all of our runners,” Sutton said. “We believe this will elevate The Marathon Project race-day experience to a new level and help our athletes run as fast as possible.”
