Sports Basement to host three Pre-Race Training Runs in Orange County which kick off this Sunday, August 25; officially 40 days out from the 40th Long Beach Marathon

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – August 22, 2024 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – In a significant expansion of its long term partnership with Motiv Sports, Sports Basement, a leading specialty sporting goods retailer, has been named the Official Specialty Retailer for both the Long Beach Marathon and the Surf City 10 this fall. This announcement coincides with the planned opening of a new Sports Basement store in Long Beach, as well as the milestone 40th running of the Long Beach Marathon and Half Marathon in October.

The new Sports Basement location will serve as a community hub for local runners in and around Long Beach, offering training runs, special events, exclusive discounts and an expansive selection of shoes and gear for runners.

“We are thrilled to build on our successful partnership with Sports Basement, which started many years ago at the Golden Gate Half Marathon in San Francisco,” said Phyllis Blanchard, Vice-President of Partnerships at Motiv Sports. “Expanding our collaboration to include the Long Beach Marathon and Surf City 10 underscores our commitment to enhancing the runner experience across some of California’s most beloved races and communities.”

The Long Beach store will feature state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the needs of both amateur and professional runners. It will provide a full spectrum of running gear, expert advice, and community support, all aimed at fostering a vibrant local running scene.

“Opening our new location in Long Beach is a milestone for Sports Basement,” stated Ian Ballentine, Director of Marketing at Sports Basement. “We are excited to announce a series of pre-race training runs. These runs are designed to support local runners that are preparing for the Surf City 10 and Long Beach Marathon. We aim to help runners of all levels achieve their personal bests. To that end, our store will be the go-to place for race preparation, recovery, and an epic 40th anniversary post-event celebration.”

The community-oriented training runs will take place at Sports Basement’s Orange County location on August 25, September 8 and a final tune-up on September 29. Each session offers participants personalized coaching, tips on race readiness, and exclusive gear offers, ensuring runners are well-prepared to tackle their upcoming races.

The Long Beach Marathon has been one of the most popular and respected marathons in the country, showcasing the city’s miles of sandy beaches and unique neighborhoods. The marathon is Southern California’s largest fall road race and will welcome over 20,000 runners back to the oceanfront streets of downtown Long Beach for its 40th edition on the weekend of October 5-6, 2024. Most importantly, the event annually provides a platform for dozens of local charities and non-profit organizations to raise money for their respective causes.

Race weekend kicks off on Friday, October 4 with a two-day Health and Fitness Expo at Long Beach’s Marina Green. The free expo is open to the public and features dozens of products for sample and sale as all race participants pick up their bib number, t-shirt, and swag bag. The running gets started on Saturday morning at the Aquarium of the Pacific 5k, which is the perfect distance for runners of all abilities. Athletes can run the 5k with friends and family or use it as a shakeout run for Sunday’s races.

Sunday’s events include the Long Beach Marathon Bike Tour, which provides avid and leisure cyclists the opportunity to ride on the marathon’s roads closed to vehicular traffic. It is a safe, scenic, and fully closed 20-mile course. The bike tour features all the marathon weekend experience fun without the run, including a commemorative event shirt, finishers medal, complimentary beer and more.

A perfect tune-up for marathon training, the Surf City 10 is Orange County’s oldest race offering 10-mile, 10k and 5k distances. Known for its stunning backdrop of Huntington Beach’s world-famous pier, sand and surf, the historic event provides the perfect out and back course for runners of all abilities.
