‘World’s Fastest 5k’ returns the weekend of March 21-22, 2020
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2020) – The Carlsbad 5000 will return for its 35th edition the weekend of March 21-22, 2020. Event registration opened on New Year’s Day with special pricing available for a limited time.
“Our team is thrilled to announce that registration will be opening for the 35th running of this iconic race on January 1st. Last year’s event was an overwhelming success and we are grateful to each and every person who played a role in making our first year of ownership so special,” said Meb Keflezighi, the only runner in history to win the NYC Marathon, Boston Marathon, and an Olympic medal. “We’ve set our sights on even bigger goals for 2020 and are honored to once again welcome people of all ages and abilities to Carlsbad Village for one of the most scenic 5k road races in the world. We’ll have several exciting announcements in the coming weeks, but one thing is for sure, the 35-year celebration in March will be an event that runners won’t want to miss!”
Weekend festivities kick off Saturday morning with the beloved Junior Carlsbad, a kids-only event in the heart of Carlsbad Village featuring fun runs, toddler trots, and diaper dashes! On Sunday, the World’s Fastest 5k welcomes thousands of participants to an oceanfront course with beautiful views and energetic atmosphere. The full day of racing culminates with the Skechers Performance Elite Invitationals where the fastest pros on the planet look to set new World Records on seaside streets jam packed with cheering fans!
Participants are treated to a 3.1-mile course with expansive coastal views and fresh sea breeze along a stunning stretch of the famous Pacific Coast Highway that is completely closed to traffic for the event. The race ends in style with a crowd-lined downhill sprint on Carlsbad Village Drive to a festive finisher zone where all participants receive a well-earned medal. Just beyond the finish line is the always popular Party by the Sea where runners reunite with friends and family to enjoy live music and celebrate their accomplishments.
The Carlsbad 5000 offers one of the largest 5k prize purses in the U.S. and annually attracts amateur, competitive, and professional runners from around the world. Since the inaugural edition in 1986, the Carlsbad 5000 has seen 17 World records and eight U.S. records, including the IAAF World Record tying effort by Edward Cheserek in 2019. In addition, the event is home to fastest 5k ever run on the roads: 13:00 by Kenya’s Sammy Kipketer in 2000.
