Ragnar celebrates the return of Wasatch Back, the race that started it all

June 13, 2024

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Ragnar Wasatch Back, the original Ragnar event and the one that started it all in 2004, returned this past weekend to Northern Utah. After not being run since 2019, the full event welcomed well over 200 teams and almost 3,000 runners on June 7-8. The return was celebrated by running enthusiasts all across Utah.

At this event, teams of twelve ran approximately 200 miles, starting at Utah State University in Cache Valley and ending by running up Guardsman Pass to the finish line at Brighton Ski Resort. Participants ran day and night and day, in a relay format, while those that were not running traveled the course in team vans while recovering and waiting their turn to be on the course.

Wasatch Back showcases the wonder of the Wasatch Mountain range of Northern Utah. From the start in beautiful Cache Valley the race ran over spectacular Avon pass to the scenic Ogden Valley. Following a stop at Snowbasin, site of the 2002 Olympic Alpine events, the race followed fast flowing rivers and stunning mountain valleys circling past Park City, until the steep ascent up the backside of the Wasatch to the summit of Big Cottonwood Canyon and Brighton Ski Resort at 8,700 feet. There is not another race like it anywhere.

“This was a fantastic weekend in Utah as we presented the original Ragner event, Ragnar Wasatch Back. Tens of thousands of runners have taken part over the years and it was great to welcome so many new ones to such a unique and amazing racing experience,” said Ragnar General Manager Philip Lahaye. “Ragnar is known for wonderful adventure and inspiring accomplishment, but what sets it apart is the team relay format. The adventure and accomplishment is unique in its relay format and includes friends, family and teammates. We are so happy to bring this event back to Northern Utah and look forward to presenting the race year after year to running enthusiasts from all over. This is a destination race and we hope as many runners as possible are able to experience it in the years to come.”
