Punta del Este hosts riders for GFNY South America Championship this weekend

GFNY heads to Punta del Este in Uruguay for the GFNY South American Championship this Sunday, March 15.

NEW YORK CITY, March 11, 2020 – Often referred to as the San Tropez of South America, Punta del Este is a gem of a GFNY destination. Punta del Este offers a wide variety of restaurants and sights and sounds to be enjoyed post-race.

Starting and finishing in the heart of Punta’s glitzy downtown, riders head out along coastal roads and then wind inland via scenic ranches and various villages.

There is a lot to race for. The race this year hosts the South American Championship. The overall winners will receive entry and paid accommodation to the GFNY World Championship on May 17^th, 2020. Additionally, those finishing in the top 20% of age groups will qualify for the racer corral at GFNY World Championships.

The long competitive distance of 171km has 1789m of climbing and nine rolling climbs in total on a maximum gradient of 12%. El Chorro is the first climb early in the race at km 21. At km 72, Zanja del Tigra is a 3.5k climb and the highest peak, indicating the halfway point, before a rolling descent back into Punta del Este.

The non-competitive medium route of 84km/681m is a shortened version of the long distance taking on 2 of the 7 climbs from the long distance.

The 10th annual GFNY World Championship New York will be held on May 17, 2020. The race features the world’s most international peloton with riders from over 90 countries. Athletes take on a challenging 100-mile route from NYC to Bear Mountain to Fort Lee to compete against each other, the clock and themselves in a personal endurance challenge.
