Portland Marathon to Debut the Quantum Fiber 10K at 2024 Event
September 20, 2024
The 6.2-mile race will become a part of the annual event for the first time ever
PORTLAND, Ore. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The Portland Marathon presented by OHSU Health has announced the addition of a 10K distance to its 52nd annual event, taking place this year on Oct. 6. Quantum Fiber, an internet service provider (ISP), will serve as the title sponsor of the new event. It joins the lineup alongside the Doernbecher Kids 1 Mile Run, 13.1-mile half marathon and 26.2-mile marathon taking place the same day. Registration for all race distances is currently open and is expected to sell out.
This is the first time that the Portland Marathon presented by OHSU Health will be offering a 10K distance. The new Quantum Fiber 10K will start in the Portland Waterfront Park right beside Hawthorne Bridge. The course will take participants on a 6.2-mile journey through the scenic neighborhoods of Northwest Portland, including Nob Hill and the Pearl District, before looping back to the waterfront finish line.
“The 10K is a popular distance for new and experienced runners alike, and this additional distance means there is truly something for everyone and every goal on race day. We expect this addition to bring even more participants out to enjoy the incredible experience that the Portland Marathon provides for both locals and visitors,” said Phil Dumontet, CEO of Brooksee, producer of the Portland Marathon. “In addition to having a new distance offered, we also are welcoming Quantum Fiber as a new sponsor, and their partnership will only enhance the experience of those who take on the brand new Quantum Fiber 10K.”
The full and half marathon distances will both offer a fast elevation profile with the start and finish line only 36 feet above sea level, and a maximum course elevation of just 178 feet. The marathon offers a unique race experience through Portland’s iconic landmarks and neighborhoods. Starting at Waterfront Park, runners pass through downtown, Old Town, NW 23rd Ave, the Pearl District and then cross the Broadway Bridge to explore the Rose Quarter area before crossing back over the Broadway Bridge. The route continues along the river, through Sellwood-Moreland, Eastmoreland and Reed College. The race then takes runners down the Eastbank Esplanade, through a final loop around Old Town, and on a sprint to the finish at Waterfront Park. The Doernbecher Kids 1 Mile Run is a 1-mile out-and-back course starting in Waterfront Park and runs directly along the waterfront path.
Race weekend also features the Health and Lifestyle Expo located inside the Oregon Convention Center, which will host a variety of vendors offering runner-friendly products and services. The Expo will be open the day before race day on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On that same Saturday, a shakeout run in partnership with Portland Running Company and 10 local running clubs will be taking place at 8:30 a.m. just before the Expo opens. The run will start and finish at the Portland Waterfront Park near the Salmon Street Springs Fountain. The FREE shakeout run is expected to draw hundreds of runners.
