November 11th. /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – BOULDER, CO — In a powerful demonstration of endurance and purpose, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers completed an extraordinary 8,423-minute stationary bike ride – one minute for every cyclist and pedestrian killed on U.S. roads in 2023. Their wheels never stopped turning during the six-day non-stop effort, which raised $48,318 for road safety and paid special tribute to Magnus White, a 17-year-old US National Cycling Champion and US National Cycling Team Member killed last year by a reckless driver.

Starting November 2nd at 5:05 PM, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity members took turns pedaling day and night through sun, rain, snow, and exhaustion. The ride concluded at precisely 12:28 PM on November 8th – marking the exact time Magnus was struck and killed. The bike was riderless for the last minute of the ride, in honor of Magnus. Together, they covered roughly 2,100 miles, equivalent to cycling from Boulder to New York City.

“That bike never stopped pedaling. Each minute on that bike represented someone’s child, parent, spouse, sibling, or friend. Through the snow, darkness, and biting cold, each of us knew we were riding for something greater. As we watched the minutes pile up and laid out candle after candle, the staggering weight of those 8,423 lives sank in—a reminder of real, irreplaceable people whose stories were cut short,” said Sebastian Edwards, Pi Kappa Alpha member. “We rode to remember strangers. People we had never met yet felt obligated to honor in a world where road safety is an actual crisis. However, for us, Magnus wasn’t just another statistic––he was our friend. He should have been here riding today, and every pedal stroke, every hour, was our call for change, our demand for safer roads. We will never get Magnus back; his life was stolen, and no amount of riding can change that. We rode to honor those lives, to fight for a world where events like this wouldn’t have to span 7 days. A world where 8,423 could never be a number tied to pedestrian and cyclist tragedy. This ride was our promise to remember, our promise to fight for change.”

Magnus’ parents, Jill and Michael White, witnessed the fraternity’s determination firsthand. “These young men have truly raised awareness about how driver behavior can have devastating consequences,” said Michael White. “More importantly, they’re committed to changing their own driver behavior – no phone distractions, no impaired driving, and being responsible behind the wheel. After seeing the impact firsthand of a life stolen by dangerous driving behavior, they don’t want to be killed by a driver, and they don’t want to kill anyone as a driver. Their commitment to honoring not just Magnus, but all victims of traffic violence, it gives us hope.”

The $48,318 raised to date will help fuel The White Line Foundation’s mission to transform road safety and combat dangerous driving. But the fraternity’s message reaches beyond fundraising: every one of the 8,423 minutes served as a reminder that these deaths aren’t just numbers – they’re preventable tragedies that demand immediate action. The pledge site will remain open until Nov 15, 2024 to take additional donations.

About Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity

Pi Kappa Alpha, also known as Pike, is a fraternity at the University of Colorado Boulder, and we are proud to be the Beta Upsilon chapter of the national organization. Our brotherhood is rooted in a commitment to leadership, service, and making a positive impact, and this mission is exemplified through our latest initiative, “Pike on a Bike.” In partnership with The White Line Foundation, this philanthropy event aims to raise $100,000 to support advocacy for cyclist and pedestrian safety, as well as legislative reforms. The idea became both feasible and impactful thanks to the dedication and size of our chapter, and it was further inspired by Pike brothers Gavin and Graydon Abel, who were close friends and teammates of Magnus White. Magnus’s legacy continues to motivate this joint initiative, driving our efforts to honor him and create lasting change in our community.

About The White Line
The White Line exists because Magnus White’s life was stolen by a reckless driver. We are the new voice for change, born from tragedy and fueled by urgency. Our mission is clear: honor Magnus’ legacy by transforming how drivers behave around cyclists and pedestrians. Behavior change is immediate and effective. We’re not asking nicely. We’re making change today.

We cannot afford to sit back and hope for slow policy changes or long-term infrastructure improvements. People are dying now, and we need to act now. No apologies. No more stolen lives. No more shattered families. We’re committed to making the roads safer today.
