PeopleForBikes Coalition Board Meets to Discuss Plans for 2021, Welcome New Board Members and Giant’s An Le as Vice Chair

December 16, 2020

BOULDER, COLO. (Dec.16, 2020)— The PeopleForBikes Coalition Board of Directors, composed of 18 of the bike industry’s top leaders, met virtually for their semi-annual gathering on December 15.

The board discussed the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on bicycle participation, access and the industry; the organization’s workplan for the upcoming year and their vision to keep bikes front and center in 2021. Looking into next year, the board and organization sees more people on bikes more often to improve their health, boost the economy, strengthen our nation and protect the planet.

The board approved new leadership and three new board members. An Le, global marketing director at Giant Bicycles, was elected vice chairman of the board of directors. Kim Price, leader of global strategy at Specialized Bicycle Components; Daniel Trujillo, executive vice president and global chief ethics and compliance officer at Walmart and Joe Graney, CEO of Santa Cruz Bicycles, joined as new additions to the board.

The board meeting primarily focused on discussing and approving PeopleForBikes’2021 Workplan, which outlines the organization’s vision to improve bicycling and the bike business. Highlights from the 2021 Workplan include: advancing a proactive trade agenda, increasing federal investments in bike infrastructure projects; increasing access for electric bicycles and creating purchase incentive programs; creating a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive bike industry; launching youth-focused pilot programs to get more kids on bikes and working with cities to quickly build connected bike networks.

Also discussed were two recent surveys conducted by PeopleForBikes on how bicyclists and cities across the U.S. responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Key findings from the research include: 10% of American adults engaged with bicycling in a new way during the pandemic (either riding for the first time in a year or more and/or participating in a different type of riding), and those who started bicycling during the pandemic plan to continue riding for the foreseeable future both for recreation and transportation. Further, city leaders listened to direct requests from their communities to change and adapt local streets and parks to accommodate an increased demand for bicycling. The full, detailed report will be released early next year.
