P3R Committed to Making the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events a “Zero Waste” Event

New partnership with Evoqua will help the weekend of events grow its sustainability initiatives

PITTSBURGH, PA /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – P3R has named Evoqua Water Technologies, the Pittsburgh-based provider of water and wastewater treatment solutions, as the Official Sustainability Partner of the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events. Through this new partnership, P3R will grow its sustainable initiatives and hopes to continue the legacy of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events being designated as a “zero waste” event.

For more than a decade, P3R has partnered with the Pennsylvania Resource Council to create a comprehensive sustainability plan that runs from the start line through the finish line festival to collect and sort as much material as possible that is reusable, compostable or recyclable. Together their efforts have paid off, and since 2015, the Pittsburgh Marathon has been considered a “zero waste” event with 90 percent or more of waste diverted from the landfill. P3R works with several community organizations to achieve green initiatives, such as composting banana peels; recycling water bottles and cups; recycling heat sheets; and donating clothes left by runners to Goodwill.

“Creating a sustainability plan for a 26.2-mile race that annually attracts more than 30,000 participants, 4,000 volunteers and 300,000 spectators is no easy task but one we take seriously and are committed to improving each year,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “We would not be able to achieve our sustainability goals without the support of community partners like Evoqua.”
