New event: SwimRun Cape Cod set for Sept. 2023
March 15, 2023
BOSTON, MA/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/- New England Endurance Events has added its first swimrun race to the company’s schedule of multisport events for 2023.
SwimRun Cape Cod will be held on September 16; traversing the beaches, highlands, woods and glacier-formed kettle ponds within the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts.
Two distances will be held: a short race (9 miles of running and 1.6 miles of swimming across 7 bodies of water) and a super-short race (3.5 miles of running with 0.75 miles of swimming across three lakes and ponds). Co-race director Andy Scherding said a long distance option is planned for 2024.
“Swimrun has been an amazing addition to the race choices for endurance athletes worldwide,” Scherding said. “Having competed in several swimruns in other parts of the U.S., our staff is thrilled to be able to introduce this format to more athletes in New England.”
The race will begin on a beach alongside the Atlantic Ocean in Truro, near the tip of Cape Cod. Competitors will follow ancient footpaths and unpaved fire roads into the fishing village of Wellfleet. All seven swims along the way will be held in fresh-water lakes and ponds with an expected water temperature of 72 degrees. Scherding said the race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, and all water crossings will be protected by open-water-certified lifeguards.
Like most swimrun events, two-person teams may be formed or a racer can choose to enter as a solo competitor. Generally accepted swimrun protocols and rules will apply.
New England Endurance Events is headed by Kathleen Walker and Andy Scherding. It produces seven triathlons and multisport events ranging from sprint-distance triathlons to the unique Sea to Summit long-distance adventure triathlon. Its website is at neeevents.com.
