Mortal Hydration Becomes The Official Sports Beverage and Hydration Partner of The IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 North American Triathlon Series
April 18, 2024
Mortal Hydration is set to help athletes have their best day as an on-course hydration option at North American IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races in 2024
TAMPA, Fla. / BOULDER, Colo. (April 18, 2024) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – IRONMAN and Mortal Hydration today announced Mortal Hydration as the official sports beverage and hydration partner for the IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® North American Triathlon Series. Varieties of the Mortal Hydration Drink Mix will be available on-course, giving athletes great-tasting and effective hydration at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events in North America in 2024.
The new hydration mix is Mortal’s first beverage developed to help athletes during training and competition. After two years in development and testing by world-class athletes, Mortal’s flavor profiles have been refined to ensure that athletes will be hydrated and will never suffer from flavor fatigue with great tasting options. Each of the three varieties are both simultaneously sweet and tart, a perfect combo that encourages athletes to sip more often to combat chronic under-hydrating that impacts so many athletes.
“Staying hydrated is the essential part of a challenging endurance event like an IRONMAN triathlon,” said Mortal founder Becca Schepps, a former collegiate rower and professional cyclist. “We’re so excited to offer Mortal Hydration’s high-performance electrolyte mix to IRONMAN athletes. It will ensure all athletes on course are seriously hydrated with a full electrolyte profile formulated to fight dehydration and set athletes up to have their best race possible.”
Mortal Hydration was formulated with the latest sports science and endurance sport fueling strategies in mind and offers athletes a hydration mix that tastes great and delivers the right balance of flavor, nutrients, and electrolytes. Mortal is designed to be integrated into a high-carb fueling strategy where athletes consume 80g to 100g of carbs per hour from concentrated nutrition and then use Mortal as part of a hydration strategy to replenish electrolytes.
Mortal Hydration offers a full electrolyte profile and the ability to titrate sodium levels across three flavors – Margarita, Berry, and Mango. Each flavor has 10g of carbohydrates to help with electrolyte absorption and is available in both a regular variety with 450 mg of sodium citrate and 190mg of additional electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, and calcium), and a salty version with 925 mg of sodium citrate and 190mg of additional electrolytes – perfect for very hot days or heavy sweaters.
“Understanding the evolving nutrition strategies of triathletes, we are pleased to be able to partner with Mortal Hydration to provide an effective electrolyte hydration option to pair with Maurten gels on course at our IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 North American events,” said Keats McGonigal, Vice President of North American Operations for The IRONMAN Group “It is often said nutrition is the fourth discipline of triathlon events, and importantly a strategy to stay hydrated with appropriate electrolyte intake can help athletes get to the finish line.”
To allow athletes time to adjust to the new product offering, Mortal Hydration will be an on-course option added to previous electrolyte options, with a full exclusive roll out of the product on course beginning with July events. Sample packs will also be available for purchase in the official IRONMAN Merchandise store.
Mortal Hydration is available online via The Feed, and is available in a variety of packaging to suit every athlete’s fueling needs. Athletes can choose from individual sachets, 25-packs for consistent replenishment, or explore all six flavors with packs of six samples. More information is available at www.drinkmortal.com.

Additional information
Q: Will there be immediate changes to what is provided on course at North American IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events?
A: There will be a transition period with aid stations using Gatorade Thirst Quencher, as well as Mortal Hydration. Gatorade will continue to be available on course in North America events through June 2024 to give athletes the appropriate time to prepare with the new product. As always, IRONMAN will continue to have water aid stations for athletes to mix their hydration/electrolyte of choice.
Q: Is the Mortal Hydration product “ready to drink?” on course?
A: The product will be premixed by IRONMAN event volunteers and served in a ready to drink bottle.
Q: Can athletes sample the flavors before race day?
A: Yes, sampling will be available at early seasons events and sample packs will also be available for one dollar at the IRONMAN Official Merchandise tent.
Q: Where do I get nutrition information for the product? Where can I buy the product?
A: TheFeed.com
Q: Mortal only has 10g of carbs?
A: Mortal is an electrolyte hydration drink. Its focus is on delivering fluid and 600+ mg of electrolytes per serving. In today’s modern fueling strategies, most athletes consume their carbs via Gels and High-Carb Drink Mixes that they carry on their bikes or in flasks while running. Mortal encourages athletes to think about Fuel (Carbohydrates) and Hydration (Electrolytes) as two separate and equally important parts of their nutrition strategy.
Q: How many electrolytes does Mortal have?
A: When looking at electrolytes, Mortal focused primarily on sodium levels. Mortal has 450mg of sodium in the regular version (which is what will be on course at IRONMAN events) and 900mg of sodium in the Salty version. You can also combine one serving of regular and one serving of salty to make two servings of hydration with an ideal 675mg of sodium.
In terms of total electrolytes, the account has an additional 190mg of electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, and calcium), and that is the same between the regulated and salty versions, as those are the ideal amounts regardless of sodium. That means regular mortal has 645mg of total electrolytes, and salty has 1,090mg of electrolytes (slight variations between each flavor, but not significant).
Q: How do you mix Mortal for training?
A: Mortal was optimized for a 22oz (650ml) for the optimal flavor. It can easily be diluted more with 750ml or 950ml water bottles, and many triathletes will use the 950ml bottles with a single serving of Mortal. If you want to increase your sodium level to 950ml, consider using Mortal Salty.
Q: I prefer less flavorful hydration during training. How do I use Mortal?
A: Mortal suggests two different options. Take one Salty and use it for two bottles. This cuts the flavor profile and sugar in half per bottle but keeps 450mg of sodium. The other option is to use the regular Mortal version and use a larger bottle, like 750ml or, even better, 950ml.
Q: Mortal has stevia. Is that bad?
A: Mortal’s flavor system includes cane sugar, dextrose, and a small amount of stevia. The minimal amount of stevia gives it a more dynamic flavor, balanced with unique citric acid from Austria. The flavor profile is a wave of flavor that starts out initially slightly sweet and then slightly tart; this has been uniquely designed to encourage athletes to sip and drink more frequently versus traditional one-dimensional flavor systems. Many believe Stevia is like erythritol, xylitol, or a sugar alcohol. That is NOT the case. Stevia is unrelated to these artificial sweeteners, which have no place in an exercise performance beverage. Many top sports hydration brands have stevia, including LMNT, First Endurance EFS, Liquid IV, SOS, Nuun, PNG, Saltstick, and Hammer.
