Mandela Capture Site host Amashova National Classic Cycling Race Bib Delivery

October 18, 2024

Umngeni region host the start of 126 km gran fondo distance on Sunday

Today the Chief Whip of uMngeni Municipality, Mr. Thembelani Sikhakhane, officially welcomed the cyclists who will take part in the Amashova 2024 Race which will start at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site on Sunday. Together with him, Annie Batchelder, Amashova National Classic race Director and Dani Buyo, CEO of Gran Fondo World Tour ® kick off the bib delivery at Mandela Capture Site in Howik.

For the first time in its history, the Amashova will start within the municipal area. Cyclists descended to the Capture Site to collect their race numbers. The museum and interpretation site offer visitors a retrospective of Nelson Mandela’s life and his impact on South African society, providing participants with an ideal immersion into contemporary history, featuring a spectacular 3D sculpture along the Freedom Path. This makes it the perfect starting point for the new 126 km Gran Fondo distance, which will join the classic 106 km distance at Pietermaritzburg City Hall, located at km 20 of the route.

The Amashova National Classic will host nearly 4,000 participants across all distances on Sunday, making it an event for cyclists of all levels and the Gran Fondo community, representing South Africa in the GFWT® calendar.

Bib delivery will continue on Saturday, October 19th in Durban City at Tsogo Sun Southern Sun Hotel near the arrival line at Durban Beach Front.
