May 25, 2021
Race will take place with extra safety measures
On Sunday 20 June, Gdansk – a Polish city that almost breathes triathlon – will be the scene of the inaugural LOTTO CHALLENGEGDANSK. LOTTO has become the brand new Title Partner of CHALLENGEGDANSK. Apart from this new sponsor, it is great news that this first edition of the event will take place, due to some extra safety measures taken for COVID-19.
“I’m very happy that LOTTO has become the title sponsor of our event”, said by Race Director Adam Greczylo. “It is very important that in these difficult times we have a solid and reliable partner who has been the greatest patron of Polish culture and sport for 65 years. It’s good to see the trust they have placed in us.”
This confidence is all the more welcome because organizing LOTTO CHALLENGEGDANSK this year was quite challenging. “There have been several times when we could have decided not to organise the race, but that is not in our nature. Of course the safety of all our athletes is paramount and we will never lose sight of that, but if it fits within our possibilities, we want to organise LOTTO CHALLENGEGDANSK ‘just like that’. Fortunately, organising the event actually fits within the possibilities,” Greczylo explains. “So bring it on.”
LOTTO CHALLENGEGDANSK promises to be an exciting race, with not only enthusiastic Age Groupers, but also a strong field of professional athletes. “On short notice we will announce who all will be at the start with us, but count on there being some strong athletes and big names among them. In any case, we will do everything we can to ensure that everyone enjoys a memorable race.”
Earlier the Professional Triathletes Organisation announced that it has partnered with LOTTO CHALLENGEGDANSK to provide a professional prize purse: they will provide an additional 13.000-euro to the existing prize purse of 19.000-euro. The professional race is a non-drafting Middle Distance race and has a 1.9km swim in the Baltic Sea and a lighting fast and flat 90km bike course comprising of three laps which take in the famous Energa Stadion used during the EURO2012 soccer tournament and passes through the tunnel under the Vistula river. The 21.1km run course takes athletes along the beautiful Gdansk beach to the breath-taking finish line on the Gdansk Prior Pier.
