Jan Frodeno, Alistair Brownlee and Max Neumann to go head-to-head again at IRONMAN European Championship Hamburg
May 17, 2023
Three-time IRONMAN World Champion, Jan Frodeno (DEU), makes a comeback to IRONMAN racing following his 2019 IRONMAN® World Championship win in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
HAMBURG, Germany / AIX-EN PROVENCE, France. (May 17, 2023)/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The sixth edition of the IRONMAN® European Championship Hamburg is set to take place on June 04, 2023. The professional men will be racing in a bid to be crowded IRONMAN European Champion, a title that is currently held by Denis Chevrot (FRA), as well as a piece of the $75,000 total professional prize. This much anticipated German event also offers men’s and women’s Age Group Qualifying slots to the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Nice, France on September 10, 2023 (men), and Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 14, 2023 (women). The women professionals will compete for the title of IRONMAN European Champion at Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt a month later (July, 2 2023).
With Laura Philipp (DEU) setting a world best IRONMAN time (08:18:20) at the same event last year, and a mouthwatering clash of male professionals set to race this year, spectators can expect some fast times.
The professional field features three-time IRONMAN World Champion, Jan Frodeno (DEU), who will be making a comeback to IRONMAN racing since his 2019 jaw dropping performance in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii when he claimed victory in course-record breaking fashion. After announcing his intention of racing this year’s IRONMAN World Championship in Nice, France, this will the perfect opportunity for him to make a strong statement and remind the world of his swim-bike-run prowess in long course racing ahead of the pinnacle event in September. Frodeno is no stranger to racing in Hamburg and returns to racing in the city ten years after becoming World Champion in the Mixed Relay at HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon in 2013.
Two-time Olympic Games gold medalist, Alistair Brownlee (GBR), will be looking to pick up where he left off over the distance after winning last year’s IRONMAN Kalmar-Sweden, setting the fastest IRONMAN triathlon time set by a British triathlete. Like Frodeno, Brownlee is no stranger to racing in Hamburg, becoming World Champion in the Mixed Relay at HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon in 2014. He went on to also win the individual sprint category that same year.
Following his epic performance in Ibiza, all eyes will also be on Max Neumann (AUS) who will likely be looking for another statement win against Brownlee and Frodeno. Neumann also comes off victories at last year’s GWM IRONMAN Western Australia and Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns Asia-Pacific Championship in Queensland.
The 2022 IRONMAN European Champion, Denis Chevrot (FRA) will also be attempting to defend his European title in Germany and remind the world that he will be a force to be reckoned with this year, especially with the men’s edition of the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship being in his home turf in France. The professional men’s field will also feature Kristian Høgenhaug (DNK), Matt Hanson (USA), Florian Angert (DEU), Pieter Heemeryck (BEL), Maurice Clavel (DEU), Jesper Svensson (SWE) and one of the fastest swimmers on the IRONMAN circuit, Josh Amberger (AUS).
Along with the professional men, over 3 000 men and women age group athletes representing 80 nations are expected to take to the start line in Hamburg. IRONMAN European Championship Hamburg was the first IRONMAN event on the global race calendar to sell out entries, showing just how popular the event has become since the inaugural edition in 2017.
Athletes will take on a one-loop 3.8 km swim course starting at Jungfernstieg, a fast flat 180km bike course consisting of 2 loops which will lead through Ballindamm along some of the scenic sights of Reeperbahn, the fish market and the Landungsbrücken and out into the idyllic Vier- und Marschlande. The last leg also features a fast flat four-loop 42.2 km run course allowing for fast times. The run will take athletes through the heart of the city of Hamburg and along the world famous Alster Lake before finishing at the Rathausmarkt, the central square of Hamburg.

The women’s field will feature an electric run battle between Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) and Tamara Jewitt (CAN), with the likes of Giorgia Priarone (ITA) and Alexia Bailly (FRA) looking to upset the inform duo.
