Supersapiens takes over title partnership of two-day 2022 IRONMAN World Championship

On October 6 & 8, 2022, the IRONMAN World Championship moves back to Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i where it will take place over two days for the first time in the 40-plus year history of the pinnacle event and this time with Supersapiens as the title partner. With two days of racing, the 2022 Supersapiens IRONMAN World Championship is expected to see approximately 5,000 athletes total including an expanded women’s professional field of 50 athletes race on Thursday, October 6, and 50 professional men race on Saturday, October 8.

Supersapiens, powered by Abbott’s Glucose Sport Biosensor, delivers innovative insights around glucose data to help athletes to make informed nutrition decisions around training and recovery. Supersapiens is the first over-the-counter energy management system designed to visualize and understand the connection between glucose levels, energy, and performance.

Supersapiens launched to the public in September 2020 and the Supersapiens system, including the Abbott Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor, allows athletes to automatically receive their glucose levels every minute to the Supersapiens app via Bluetooth. This data can be viewed on Supersapiens app or their groundbreaking wearable device, the Supersapiens Energy Band, which is the first and only performance wearable that is capable of reading glucose data directly from the Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor.

In addition to serving as the title partner for the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship, Supersapiens will be the ‘Official Real-Time Energy Management System Partner’.

“Since announcing our partnership with IRONMAN last year, we have been enlivened by the response from triathletes and their eagerness to include Supersapiens in their training programs. The interest and adoption by the IRONMAN community has been incredible and we are motivated to continue improving our relationship with all endurance athletes,” said Supersapiens founder and CEO, Phil Southerland. “We recognize that real-time glucose visibility and being able to make more informed fueling decisions helps triathletes master the fourth discipline of the sport. Recently, we released the Supersapiens Energy Band, which allows athletes to have minute-by-minute glucose data on their wrist or handlebars without needing to carry their phone. Together, we want to help athletes unlock the key to understanding their body and fundamentally change the way they approach energy management.”

IRONMAN World Championship

Since its inception in 1978 on the Island of O`ahu, the IRONMAN World Championship has etched its name in history through stellar performances, inspirational participants and emotional memories. In 1981, the race moved from the tranquil shores of Waikīkī to the barren lava fields of Kona on the Island of Hawai`i where it continues to take place to this day. The race now sees over 2,500 athletes embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind, and spirit to earn the title of IRONMAN World Champion. The most iconic one-day sporting event in the world is the culmination of 40 global IRONMAN events with over 94,000 athletes around the world striving for one of the coveted qualifying slots. The 2021 edition of the event will take place in St. George, Utah in May 2022, becoming the first location to host the event outside of Hawai`i since its origins in 1978. After a two-year hiatus from Kona due to COVID, the race will return to Kona and take place as a two-day event in October for the 2022 edition of the World Championship. IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship

In 2006 the inaugural IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship was held in Clearwater, Florida becoming another test for the world’s elite triathletes. Since that auspicious beginning, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship has grown in stature and popularity moving first to Henderson, Nevada in 2011, where athletes encountered a more challenging terrain and then to Mont-Tremblant, Quebec—its first stop on the new “global rotation” for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. The event reached European soil for the first time ever in 2015, with Zell am See, Austria, hosting an epic and memorable event. In 2016, the race moved from the mountains to the beaches of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. In 2017, the race returned to the United States, taking place in Chattanooga, Tennessee where it became a two-day event for the first time. In 2018, the event reached the African continent for the first time and was hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa. Continuing the rotation, 2019 saw the French Riviera and Nice, France play host to the ever-growing IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship event. After a year in which the event was not able to take place due to a global pandemic, the race returned in 2021 with over 3,500 athletes competing in St. George, Utah. The event will again take place in St. George, Utah, returning to a two-day format on October 28-29, 2022, before shifting to Lahti, Finland on August 26-27, 2023 and Taupō, New Zealand on December 14-15, 2024. Historically, more than 200,000 athletes have participated annually in a series of qualifying races, consisting of over 100 global events. Hosting more than 5,000 athletes from around the world, participants in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship have ranged in age from 18 to 85-plus.
