AVALON, Calif. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The Hi Tec Catalina Island Half Marathon, one of the most popular trail half marathons in California, welcomed over 1,100 participants to its annual event on Nov. 9. The half marathon challenged participants through climbs, peaks and vistas, while the 10K took participants through the historical city of Avalon before leading to some of Catalina Island’s scenic trails just above the city.
Jonathan Toker, the men’s half marathon champion, completed the 13.1 miles in 1:32:29. Coming in after Toker was the men’s half marathon second-place finisher, Chris Glibert. Erik Reed took the third-place spot. The women’s half marathon course was led by Katie Yensen, who finished with a time of 1:49:01. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day of trail running on the beautiful Catalina Island,” said Mike Bone, President and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management, which produces the Hi Tec Catalina Island Half Marathon & 10K. “This year’s event was packed with high spirited participants and perfect weather, a recipe for a fun and successful race day!”
The half marathon took participants through the city of Avalon, ran past the Wrigley Mansion, and then entered the Interior for a few miles of climbs. The trail runners then submitted with scenic views of the Pacific Ocean. After running past the summit they then journeyed downhill through the Wrigley Memorial before finishing back in Avalon. The 10K course will begin in the middle of Avalon and run through the city before entering 2.5 miles of trails just above the city landscape. Participants will journey past some of Avalon’s most famous landmarks including the Casino building, by the Wrigley’s house, on to horse trails, past the golf course, and loop back into Avalon, finishing by the fountain, a landmark of downtown.
The Hi Tec Catalina Island Half Marathon & 10K is a part of Run Catalina Island’s Triple Crown Challenge. The challenge involves completing all three Run Catalina Island events within a 12-month period. This includes the Avalon 50K or 50 Mile, Catalina Island Marathon, and Hi Tec Catalina Island Half Marathon & 10K. Runners may begin their Catalina Island Triple Crown journey with any one of these races, but all specified distances must be completed within a 12-month period, meaning they must finish all three races consecutively once they begin. Athletes who complete the challenge receive discounted registration for all three events, individual event swag for each race, an official Triple Crown finisher jacket, Hi-Tec shoes, and a one-of-a-kind belt buckle. Over 25 participants received their official Triple Crown status at this year’s event.
This year’s event benefited the Catalina Island Conservancy and Avalon Lions Club, which supports numerous local causes and non-profit organizations. Each year, the Avalon Lions guarantee a scholarship to all graduating students from Avalon High School who wish to continue their education.
