11 Year Director of IU 500 Festival Mini-Marathon Receives Prestigious Award at annual Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting in Hollywood, FL
December 16, 2024 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – A committee made up of race directors, athletes, media, corporate executives, and club officials has named Glen Amos, Director of the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Delta Dental 5k, the MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year. MYLAPS Sports Technology is the presenting sponsor.
Phil Stewart, President of Road Race Management praised Glen Amos for his longtime leadership of the festival. “Glen is an example of a highly competent leader, who has built both a local and nationally recognized event. Glenn is everything you look for in a race director. His passion for the sport, interest in elevating participant experiences, commitment to safety, calmness under pressure, and ability to foster camaraderie while working toward a common goal truly sets him apart.
Now in his 11th year, Amos has served as the race director of the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Delta Dental 500 Festival 5k for most of his career. This event held annually on the first Saturday of May in Indianapolis attracts over 20,000 participants from all 50 states and six countries. A highlight of the race is the 2.5 mile stretch on the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the Indianapolis 500 takes place just weeks later.
Glenn understands events such as this take a community. He is a team player not only working with an internal team of 18, and an intern class of 12 annually, but he also works closely and heavily with the Indianapolis Police Department, National Guard, Homeland Security, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, local broadcast partner, and other local organizations.
During the COVID years, Glenn played a key role in keeping participants engaged with the 500 Festival’s running events. He introduced the 500 Mile Challenge, a virtual fitness challenge where participants log 250 or 500 miles over four months, raising over $500,000 in its first year. This initiative helped the 500 Festival navigate the pandemic and remains a significant revenue stream today.
