From She Tris to NCAA at Newberry College

Samantha Duncan To Join South Carolina’s Only NCAA Triathlon Team After Completing First Triathlon This Spring

Charleston, SC (June 2021). She Tris Sprint Triathlon events, known for their beginner friendly and encouraging triathlon environment, sees many first time triathletes cross the finish line. Many times, the finish line is the goal, but in May, one first time athlete, Samantha Duncan, took things to a new level. Duncan, 20, finished her first ever tri at the Crews Subaru She Tris Hobcaw Yacht Club event on May 23rd, made the podium in her age group, and has since committed to the NCAA Triathlon team at Newberry College. The college, founded in 1856, recently added women’s triathlon to their Division II varsity sports offering. They are currently the only college in South Carolina to offer NCAA Triathlon.

Head Coach, Harley Nunan, is actively recruiting athletes for the inaugural team and is thrilled to welcome Duncan to the team. Duncan, a  long time runner,  joined Palmetto TRIbe, the Charleston area’s premiere youth and junior triathlon team, for a three-month coached training program to help prepare her for the Fall collegiate season. Practicing in-person with Palmetto TRIbe’s Emerging Elite team, she gained technical skills, endurance fitness, speed and triathlon race experience.

“My first triathlon experience exceeded my expectations. Coming from a running background, it was amazing to see the sport flow through each detailed segment. It’s an intense, technical competition!” said Duncan.

A month later Duncan raced her first open water triathlon in Sebring, Florida, and again took home an age group podium award. Duncan enjoys the local triathlon races and will be racing the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series and additional She Tris events before heading to Newberry this Fall.

“We loved that we could be a part of Samantha’s first triathlon experience and we look forward to seeing her again before she leaves for Newberry,” said She Tris founder and Champion of Confidence, Angi Klick. “We also feel lucky to work with area partners like Palmetto TRIbe to bring more young girls to our sport,” Klick added.

She Tris was founded in 2016 by Angela Klick to provide a high quality race experience for women regardless of whether they were new to the sport of a seasoned triathlete.
