Championing the Unsung Heroes of RBC GranFondo Whistler

September 5, 2024

Celebrating Our Volunteers

Vancouver/Whistler /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – As we approach the RBC GranFondo Whistler on September 7, 2024, we celebrate not only the cyclists but also the dedicated volunteers who have played an integral role in the event’s success over the years.

The Heart of the Event

Since its inception in 2010, the RBC GranFondo Whistler – North America’s largest mass participation cycling event – has relied on a passionate and diverse group of volunteers known warmly as the “Squadra” who bring the event to life. From setting up registration booths to handing out food and drink along the route, these volunteers ensure that every aspect of the ride runs smoothly and safely. Some of their stories follow shortly.

A Community United

The sense of community spirit fostered by the volunteers is palpable. Every year, over 600 individuals from all walks of life come together to support the event. Their efforts create a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere that riders and spectators alike have come to cherish.

Said event director, Oli Cartmell, “You really have to see the scale of these volunteering efforts first hand to understand the magnitude of the time and energy that folks put in. This year there are a record number of volunteer signups at over 650 shifts filled. It truly speaks to the togetherness of the community here in BC and we are so grateful for everyone who gets involved.”

Volunteer Stories

Many volunteers have been with the event since its early years, sharing their passion and enthusiasm year after year. Take, for example, Carol Song, who returns year after year to offer her time as a volunteer lead:

“The Squadra volunteer team has great energy! I have had so many memorable moments, from taking photos for a US bike club riding in memory of a late friend, to getting to know my volunteers over a slice of pizza. I also love that there’s great swag for the participants and for the volunteers!”

The Impact of Volunteering

The contributions of volunteers extend beyond race day. Their involvement helps promote the event, draw participants from around the world, and boost local tourism and economy. By giving their time, volunteers help create lasting memories for participants and foster a strong sense of community pride.

Apurva Patel is a father of two who is volunteering at this year’s event alongside his sons. He says that for him, “it’s a great opportunity to continue teaching his children important values such as working hard, accountability and contributing to the community”.

Apurva first experienced volunteering at cycling events at June’s XFondo Whistler, a sister event of RBC GranFondo Whistler, and had such a good time that him and his family are back for more on a far grander scale.

Volunteer Opportunities and Benefits

Volunteering at the RBC GranFondo Whistler is not only rewarding but also offers unique perks. Volunteers receive event swag, complimentary meals, and the opportunity to experience the excitement of race day up close. Additionally, many volunteers form lasting friendships and networks within the vibrant cycling community.

Sue Milner is signed up again this year as a Course Marshall captain. She says engaging with volunteers is a rewarding experience:

“Our section of the Squadra enjoys the excitement that comes with marshalling the last segment of the race, before the end. This is where everyone is cheering each other on to make it across the finish line. The atmosphere at this location is electric, between the riders, volunteers and the spectators, with everyone getting to enjoy this high profile sporting event”.

A Word of Thanks

Neil McKinnon, founder of the RBC GranFondo Whistler, emphasizes the importance of volunteers: “Our volunteers are the backbone of this event. Without their dedication and enthusiasm, the GranFondo would not be the incredible experience it is today. We are deeply grateful for their tireless efforts and unwavering support. Thank you to each and every volunteer for making this event possible.”
