B-17 Flying Fortress to be featured for the upcoming History and Heritage Race Series
June 1, 2021
The History & Heritage Race Series, powered by the Air Force Marathon, will hold three more virtual races in 2021. Soaring in as the fourth historical aircraft to be highlighted for the race series is the B-17 Flying Fortress, beginning July 1.
As the second most produced bomber in United States Air Force history, the retired B-17 aircraft is one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. The B-17 bomber was greatly relied on in Europe for the strategic bombing campaign against Axis forces.
“We are honored to feature the B-17 Flying Fortress in our History and Heritage Race Series,” said Brandon Hough, USAF Marathon director. The Flying Fortress was one of the most-produced aircraft in aviation history which is testament to its incredible importance in the history of the U.S. Air Force.”
The Memphis Belle, on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, was the first B-17 to survive 25 combat missions.
The fourth History and Heritage race in the series will begin July 1.
Each History and Heritage Race Series participant will receive a patch of the featured aircraft for that particular race, an aircraft information card, a finisher’s medal and a downloadable finisher’s certificate.
Participants will have the option to choose between the marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K.
