Boston’s Only Triathlon Featured a Day of Thrilling Races that included 1,500 Competitors

BOSTON, MA /ENDURANC SPORTSWIRE/ – On a warm summer day, the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon returned to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston. In the 14th annual event, Aaronn Gu of Brookline, MA, captured the title of top male athlete in the Olympic Distance race and Emily Tato of Somerville, MA triumphed as the top female athlete. In the Sprint Distance race, Mohamad Alsabbagh of Somerville captured the title of top male athlete in the race and Reia Tong of New York, NY triumphed as the top female athlete.

This year’s USA Triathlon-sanctioned event drew thousands of competitors including U.S. para-athletes, and featured both an Olympic distance and a sprint distance race, along with the Boston Corporate Cup Competition and the annual Boston Tri Club Championship. The winner of the Corporate Cup was General Electric, and the winner of the Tri Club Champions was Full Throttle. The city’s skyline made a beautiful backdrop for the race that took place at DCR’s Carson Beach, DCR William Day Boulevard, and Moakley Park. An award ceremony and party followed in the Athlete Village so all participants could celebrate their accomplishments and toast competitors.

“The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon has become a signature summer event for the city, drawing high-level athletes and beginners alike to compete in a world-class event,” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “We’re proud to not only host this exciting competition, but also to partner with the city and state, Columbia Threadneedle Investments and Boston Medical Center, and our athlete supporters to make a positive impact on the community.”

As in years past, the event’s official charity partner was Boston Medical Center (BMC). Team BMC athletes raised funds to support Boston Medical Center’s work in health equity and address social determinants of health. BMC is leading efforts to shift the health care landscape and break the chronic cycle of disease burdens dictated by race, ethnicity, ZIP code, and income. Thanks to resources provided by Team BMC fundraisers, the medical center can expand its safety-net services, community partnerships and health equity programming, and serve as advocates and partners for all patients. These expanded services will yield better health outcomes, educational advancement, economic mobility, housing, and career opportunities, resulting in happier and healthier people, families, and communities.

“We are so proud to join Boston Triathlon’s participants, event volunteers, and enthusiastic spectators to make this great event a success,” said Leslie Walstrom, global head of marketing at title sponsor Columbia Threadneedle Investments. “It’s a thrill to watch the exciting competition between athletes, and it’s an honor to support the local community through Team BMC fundraising and Boston’s Swim Safely program.”

In addition to the sprint and Olympic distance events today, hundreds of athletes under the age of 15 competed on Saturday, August 21, 2022, for Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon. The day was free for all kids thanks to Amazon and USA Triathlon as it featured the Kids Splash-and-Dash event for athletes ages 7-15 and the Kids Fun Run for all athletes under the age of 7. Youth groups from across the city took part, including the YMCA of Greater Boston, South Boston Leadership Initiative and Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a nonprofit organization based in Boston that provides Boston’s youth with year-round outdoor enrichment and leadership programs.
