A Record Number of Participants “Earn Their Wings” at the 2024 FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk

September 23, 2024

The annual event at Pittsburgh International Airport drew more than 1,800 runners and walkers

PITTSBURGH /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – A record-breaking number of runners and walkers took to the tarmac at Pittsburgh International Airport this past Saturday for the 2024 FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk, presented by CNX Resources. Sunny weather set the stage for this one-of-a-kind race, giving participants the chance to race down the runway and “earn their wings” as they passed by aircraft and equipment on the airfield, including a KC-135 and a Republic Airways airplane!

The family-friendly event brought together participants of all ages from 8-months to 83-years-old. In addition to the race, families enjoyed a vibrant festival atmosphere featuring a touch-a-truck display with airport equipment, Allegheny County Police EOD and Bomb Squad vehicles, along with their mounted police horses, face painting, lawn games with Kids of STEEL, refreshments from Urban Trail Coffee Co, and raffles prizes, including a $500 American Airlines gift card from Republic Airways.

The flat, fast course led to impressive performances, with Joe Moore, 40, of Pittsburgh, and Katie Streets, 39, of Coraopolis, crossing the finish line first in times of 17 minutes, 33 seconds and 20:00, respectively.

Proceeds from the FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk benefit the Allegheny County Airport Authority Charitable Foundation. The foundation benefits military support organizations as well as aviation scholarships and workforce development programs. Since 2016, the event has raised over $130,000 to help support these initiatives.
