Triathlon’s 50th Anniversary Weekend Set for a Sell-Out Celebration at Mission Bay

Athletes and Legends to Gather for a Historic Weekend of Races, VIP Events, and Fundraising in the Birthplace of Triathlon

San Diego, CA — October 12-13, 2024 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The birthplace of triathlon, Mission Bay, San Diego, is preparing to host a 50th Anniversary weekend celebration for the sport that started it all. With an expected sell-out crowd, the Xterra Wetsuits Mission Bay Triathlon Presented by Richard Duquette will welcome athletes, spectators, and legends from across the globe for an unforgettable weekend of history, competition, and community.

The anniversary weekend kicks off on October 12, 2024, with a special pre-race 50th Anniversary Celebration at Bonita Cove Park from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, featuring an extraordinary lineup of VIP guests who have defined the sport of triathlon over the past five decades. The celebration will be emceed by Bob Babbitt, co-founder of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and Competitor Magazine, and is hosted by Tobias and Carrie Ann Panek, Race Directors and owners of KOZ Events.

The weekend culminates in the Xterra Wetsuits Mission Bay Triathlon on October 13, 2024, featuring a variety of triathlon distances and multisport events for athletes ages 7 to 85. With options for both seasoned triathletes and first-timers, the event promises to be a fun and challenging race for all participants. Events include sprint and intermediate triathlon distances, a duathlon (Run/Bike/Run), aquabike (Swim/Bike), Aquathlon (Swim/Run) and youth races, allowing athletes of all abilities to join the celebration of the sport’s founding.

“This is more than just a race,” said Carrie Panek, Race Director at KOZ Events. “We’re honoring the incredible legacy of triathlon with a weekend full of excitement, competition, and a community that spans generations of athletes. We’re thrilled to host this milestone in the very place triathlon was born.”

The pre-race celebration will feature iconic figures such as Julie Moss, Kathleen McCartney, and Denise Mueller-Korenek, Bob Babbitt, John Howard, among many others, providing attendees with a rare opportunity to hear firsthand stories from the legends who have shaped triathlon’s history. The weekend also serves as a fundraising event for the Life Sports Foundation, which supports foster children, orphans, homeless youth, and challenged athletes through sports.

Given the significance of the 50th anniversary and the draw of triathlon’s global community, organizers are expecting a sell-out crowd for both the pre-race celebration and race day. Athletes and fans are encouraged to secure their spots early.
