Zdeno Chara to Wear Nix Hydration Biosensor for Boston Marathon

April 12, 2024

Chara has utilized the state-of-the-art hydration biosensing technology in his training for the back-to-back Boston and London weekends, and looks forward to taking what he’s learned to these iconic races.

BOSTON, MASS — April 12, 2024 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Boston-based, cutting-edge health biosensing company, Nix Biosensors, is honored to be working with NHL and Boston Bruins veteran, Zdeno Chara, in his journey to the start line of the Boston Marathon. Zdeno has been training with the biosensor for several months in preparation for the Boston Marathon and next weekend’s TCS London Marathon, as well as using it for cross-sport training as he prepares for several Ironman races this summer and fall, including Kona. Fellow athletes and race attendees can look for the green hexagonal patch on Chara’s bicep as he competes in the race on Monday.

The Nix Hydration Biosensor is a groundbreaking device that provides real-time hydration data, empowering athletes to optimize their performance by monitoring their hydration levels accurately. The device uses advanced sensors to quantify both fluid and electrolyte losses, providing athletes with critical decision-support data on their fluid intake needs during training and competition. This information helps athletes avoid dehydration, optimize their training, and improve their overall performance.

Since retiring from the NHL in 2022, Zdeno Chara has dedicated himself to endurance sports. Monday’s race will be his eighth marathon, his first being just one year ago at the 2023 Boston Marathon. Alongside his training and racing, he has dedicated himself to raising money for the Hoyt Foundation, a charitable foundation close to his heart and one Zdeno credits as huge motivation for the Bruins’ journey to the Stanley Cup in 2011. His support of the non-profit will continue in Boston 2024.

“We are so proud to support Zdeno Chara on his journey to the Boston Marathon, and his goal of raising funds for the important Hoyt Foundation”, said Nix Biosensors CEO, Meridith Cass. “The Boston Marathon is a special race for so many reasons, not the least of which is our deep connection to our hometown race and the Hoyt Foundation’s place in its story. Boston kicks off a jam-packed race calendar for Zdeno and, like all athletes, proper hydration serves as an integral piece of his training and racing strategy.”

“Running and cycling are so different from hockey and require completely different hydration strategies,” said Zdeno Chara. “The hydration strategy I used during that part of my career has been completely overhauled since entering endurance sports. Nix took the guesswork out of this for me, and I now understand what my body needs for each respective sport. For example, my sweat rate and electrolyte loss rate are 1.6x and 2.2x higher when I’m running versus cycling, respectively. Having this new understanding of my personal physiology has huge implications for how I train and race. I look forward to leveraging this new information to the course on Monday.”

Nix also wishes good luck to Dave McGillivray, Race Director of the Boston Marathon, and Nix Advisory Board member, as he sets out to run the marathon for his 52nd consecutive year. Having seen firsthand the implications of proper, and improper, hydration along the racecourse for decades, he uniquely understands the value for Boston runners, and endurance athletes worldwide, to utilize Nix’s biosensing technology.
