Over 1,300 Registered Runners Took on Kodiak Ultra Marathons by UTMB Over Three Days

- Vincient Bouillard (Ventura, Calif.) and Claire Bannwarth (Village-Neuf, France) earn victories in 100-Mile distance at the 2023 Kodiak Ultra Marathons by UTMB®

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The 2023 UTMB^® World Series continued with the 2023 Kodiak Ultra Marathons by UTMB^® on Oct. 13 – 15. The 10^th anniversary of the race featured over 1,300 registered runners from 40 States and 27 countries, regions, and territories as they descended on Big Bear Lake, Calif. to take on a distance of 100-mile, 100K, 50K, 21K, or 10K.

Kodiak offers something for every runner, with five distance options and the opportunity to run through three different climates throughout the race. Runners start and finish in the heart of downtown Big Bear Lake and run through high desert, sub alpine, and semi-arid climates to experience unique beauty and challenge throughout the route.

The 2023 Kodiak Ultra Marathons by UTMB^® is a qualifying event for the UTMB^® World Series Final and the Western States Endurance Run.

On Friday morning, Oct. 13, the runners in the 100-mile distance took off from the lively downtown in the Village of Big Bear Lake. The course featured a trek through the Siberia Canyon, over 20 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, a summit of Sugarloaf Mountain at nearly 10,000 feet, and a cruise down Knickerbocker Road to finish back in downtown Big Bear Lake. In addition, runners that finished in the allotted time also earned 4 UTMB Running Stones. Runners had 36 hours to complete the course that boasted over 17,000 feet of vertical gain.

It was Vincient Bouillard (Ventura, Calif.) finishing first overall in a time of 16:22:08. Coming in second for the men was Michael Tappel (Seattle, Wash.) with a time of 18:15:29 and Jhon Barrera (Villavicencio, Colombia) followed in third with a finishing time of 19:24:51

On the female side of the 100-mile race, Claire Bannwarth (Village-Neuf, France) bested the competition with a time of 21:10:28, while Genevieve Harrison (Eagle, Colo.) came home second with a time of 23:51:48 and Caroline Himbert (Salt Lake City, Utah) rounded out the podium with a time of 24:11:45

Also taking place over the weekend were the 100K, 50K, 21K, and 10K distances. The 100K race offered over 10,000 feet of vertical gain, while the 50K offered runners more than 5,000 feet. The 21K race offered 5,000 feet of vertical gain and the 21K offered over 1,100 feet.

Coming home first overall in the 100K was Rod Farvard (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) in a time of 9:18:22

Of the females, Amanda Basham (Bould (Location) stands atop of the podium with a time of 11:04:13.

Chad Hall (USA) 3:45:41 and Dani Moreno (USA) 4:19:09 were the first to cross the line in the 50K race. Matthew Seidel (Oakland, Calif.) in 1:32:12 and Helen Mino Faukner (Truckee, Calif.) in 1:47:18 were the first to cross the line in the 21K race and in the 10K distance, it was Karl Frederik Gleichman Andersen (Sjælland, Denmark) with a time of 48:47 and Laura Gordillo (Dillon, Colo.) with a finishing time of 1:04:24 bettering the competition.
