/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The United States Adventure Racing Association National Championship is coming to Vermont September 15-16, 2023. Based out of Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Jeffersonville, the race has teams of three paddling, swimming, mountain biking, and trekking for 30 hours non-stop through the Green Mountains. The course is top secret until maps are given out race morning.
This year’s race will feature 66 teams of three vying for the title of National Champion in three divisions: mixed gender (premier), all-female and all-male. Among them will be the winners from 10 Regional Championships across the country.
USARA Executive Director Michael Garrison, who raced the World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, broadcast on Amazon Prime in 2020, explains, “What really distinguishes adventure racing from other extreme sports is the emphasis on teamwork and navigation. To finish an adventure race, teams have to work together and keep moving in the right direction, using only a map and compass. To win, teams have to do that and also go very fast.”
Local race organizer Green Mountain Adventure Racing Association is designing the course and providing volunteers. “This is the first time in its 23-year history the USARA National Championship has come to New England, and we’re excited to introduce racers from across the country to our beautiful Vermont playground,” said GMARA Race Director Chris Yager.
