Carmel Marathon Weekend Finishers Post New Records Despite Cold and Windy Conditions
April 10, 2022
12th annual event starts with sleet and ends with course records
CARMEL, Ind. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Nearly 3,500 participants lined up for the 2022 Carmel Marathon Weekend events and took to the streets of Carmel, Indiana today in cold and windy conditions. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, runners broke four existing course records and tied one record.

Steve Froeschle, from Davenport, Iowa, broke the men’s full marathon course record by one minute. “I probably didn’t adjust my plan as much as I should have with the weather,” said Froeschle. “I wanted to hit 2:18 for an Olympic Trial qualifier. It worked out the first half but I had to just put my head down and get through the second half. Overall I was happy to get the win and a PR in the process.”
Peighton Meske of Knoxville, Tenn., took nearly 20 minutes off of her previous personal best time to win the women’s full marathon. “It was a tough course with the wind today, so it was all about staying focused and putting your head down. The lead cyclist was really motivating when it got rough. It wasn’t the exact time I wanted to get for an OTQ [Olympic Trial qualifier] but I’m really happy with a 20-minute PR and can’t wait for next year.”
With participants traveling to the area from 43 states and five countries, Hoosier hospitality and the typically unpredictable Indiana spring weather was on full display. More than 300 people took part by volunteering at Friday’s Fitness Expo, along the race course at aid stations, or handing out medals and snacks at the finish line. With the course passing through many of Carmel’s popular parks, trails and cultural districts, local residents bundled up to cheer on runners and walkers.
“It was inspiring to see so many people persevere despite the weather and make good on all of their training,” said Todd Oliver, race director for the Carmel Marathon Weekend. “Our volunteers and Carmel community members made it such a fun event, coming out to cheer on their neighbors and visitors. We really had everything here today—a finish line marriage proposal, the 50 States Marathon Club reunion, a local Carmel Police Department officer running the full marathon, and countless personal records and Boston-qualifiers throughout the field. We’re already excited about getting started for 2023!”
The 13th annual Carmel Marathon Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, 2023. Registration details as well as 2022 race results will be available at CarmelMarathon.com.
