Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo – Virtual Edition
September 3, 2020
Darwin, Australia - Continuing the momentum of the 2020 Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo, event organisers have partnered with ROUVY for a virtual eRace this Sunday 6th September.
Darwin, Australia / 3 September 2020 – Continuing the momentum of the 2020 Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo, event organisers have partnered with ROUVY for a virtual eRace this Sunday 6th September.
While the ‘actual’ event occurred on Sunday 30th August with a record 750 participants, travel restrictions prohibited many cycling fans travelling from around the world for the event. With the ROUVY eRace being held parallel to the 2020 event, it also enables local participants to do both.
The ROUVY 25km eRace will see riders from around the world take on the 25km course from Darwin, that was filmed, then converted into ROUVY’s gamified platform.
“This truly is a world class experience for riders around the world to sink their teeth into. Cycling is booming around the world, so is technology. Combined with the success of the 2020 Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo and the hype of Le Tour de France bringing extra attention to cycling at present, all the ingredients are there for a great debut eRace this Sunday,” Event Manager Richard Welsh said.
Virtual events have evolved significantly in 2020, but with the advancement of cycling smart trainers and the ROUVY APP, cyclists can compete against one another as if they were side by side on the road.
“The course will see riders start and finish at the Darwin Waterfront, taking in Darwin City, The Esplanade, Stuart Highway, Hidden Valley and Tiger Brennan Drive. It will give those from outside of Darwin a good look at the Top End, while making it interesting for locals to see their city in a different perspective,” Welsh said.
Ride Darwin’s streets in real time Sunday 6 September 2020, 4:30pm local time in the Northern Territory, Australia (that is 5pm QLD/NSW/VIC/TAS and 3pm WA or 8am in London).
All you need is access to a trainer, ROUVY AR APP and a screen.
The ROUVY eRace will include a sprint preem somewhere on ‘Stuart Highway’ and there will be separate divisions for those with a ‘smart’ trainer and those without.
