Organizers announce new Jerry Casale Memorial Award which joins the Miji Reoch Award for the top Men’s and Women’s U23 Young Riders in the Philadelphia race

May 16, 2013 – Philadelphia, PA – Organizers of the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic today announced the twenty-five men’s and twenty women’s teams selected to compete in the inaugural Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic on June 2nd in Philadelphia.

On the men’s side, the first year event is headlined by four UCI Pro Continental Teams and nine UCI Continental Teams. The women’s peloton includes five UCI Women’s Pro teams. Full team rosters will be announced in the coming weeks.

“One of our goals with the inaugural Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic is to start new tradition of pro racing in Philadelphia with the best teams possible,” said Robin Morton, Race Director, Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic.  “Teams showed tremendous interest in returning to race in Philadelphia and those selected represent some of the best on the UCI Pro Continental and Continental tours. This is going to be a tremendous race and we look forward to watching the drama unfold.”

Additionally, organizers of the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic officially announced two awards established to honor Philadelphia cycling legends.

The new Jerry Casale Memorial Award, generously underwritten by Gita Sporting Goods, will recognize the Best Young Rider (U23) in the new Men’s race.

“Jerry Casale was not only a Philadelphia cycling legend but a true institution in American cycling,” added Morton. “From the Hill Cycle Shop, to his early pro teams to establishing and maintaining Philadelphia as an iconic cycling destination, Jerry created true family atmosphere in his business and positively touched the lives of everyone involved in the sport.”

The new Jerry Casale Award joins the Miji Reoch Award which for several years has honored the Best Young Female Rider (U23) racing in Philadelphia. The Miji Reoch Award, presented by Fuji Bikes, honors the memory of Mary Jane “Miji” Reoch, the Philadelphia resident, cycling legend and 11-time National Champion.

The Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic is operated by a community-based non-profit organization formed to organize and host the new world-class professional cycling race in Philadelphia beginning in 2013. Joining Parx Casino, is event Founding Sponsor New Penn Financial, and official sponsors  Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, Sunoco, Philadelphia Energy Solutions, and Fuji Bikes, all  local companies that are proud to support the new tradition of world class cycling in Philadelphia.
